Red Cabbage Recipes

red cabbage coleslaw

There are not many red cabbage recipes and those I found mostly differ in spices used.

The German recipe below I got from a friend.

It's colorful and so delicious served with pork. I just love it and I make a big batch for leftovers.

German Red Cabbage Recipe

What you need

  • 1 head of red cabbage shredded fine
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 onion sliced
  • 2 or 3 tart apples peeled, cored and cut in pieces
  • 1 cup of water
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp vinegar

What to do

This salad can be served hot or cold. Can also be frozen

In a big pan, heat the oil then add the onion and cook over medium heat until soft and limp.

Add cabbage and stir often until soft (about 5 minutes).

Add the apples and the water.

Bring heat down and simmer covered for 1 hour.

Add the sugar, salt and pepper and the vinegar.

Mix well and serve.

Try it cold the next day.
